The Oxford Playhouse was filled with festive excitement as Oxfordshire Freemasons hosted a special matinee performance of Dick Whittington, bringing together hundreds of children, young adults with disabilities, and their carers for a joyful afternoon of theatre.
In a remarkable act of generosity, the Oxfordshire Freemasons purchased 577 tickets for the event, ensuring that families and care groups from across the county could enjoy a magical day out free of charge. Their support didn’t stop at the theatre doors—each guest was welcomed with a goody bag, a Santa hat, and an ice cream during the interval, adding extra sparkle to an already enchanting experience.
The atmosphere inside the Playhouse was one of pure delight. Laughter, applause, and cheerful chatter filled the auditorium as the cast of Dick Whittington delivered a lively, heart-warming performance. Carers and families commented on how special it was to share such a memorable outing, particularly for those who often face barriers to accessing live theatre.
All funding for the event was raised directly by the Freemasons themselves, highlighting their ongoing commitment to supporting local communities and creating inclusive, uplifting experiences for those who need them most.
By the end of the afternoon, it was clear that the pantomime project had achieved exactly what it set out to do: bring people together, spark joy, and create lasting memories. Everyone involved—from the children waving their Santa hats to the volunteers and organisers—left the theatre with smiles as bright as the Christmas lights outside.
