Oxfordshire Freemason’s 24-hour fishing event raises over £4,000 for The Hummingbird Centre

A 24-hour charity fishing event held at Pimlico Farm, Tusmore, from Friday 22nd to Saturday 23rd August 2025, has raised over £4,000 in support of The Hummingbird Cancer Support Centre in Launton.

The event was organised by Keith Harvey, a dedicated member of the Oxfordshire Freemasons and a seasoned fundraiser with over 20 years of experience running similar events, including long-standing support for Great Ormond Street Hospital. This year’s fundraiser took on special meaning as it was held in support of Graham Darby, a close friend of Keith’s and fellow Freemason, who has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

It was Graham who suggested The Hummingbird Centre as the beneficiary, recognising the vital emotional and practical support the organisation continues to provide to him and his family. Inspired by Graham’s recommendation, Keith set an initial fundraising target of £1,000 and launched a JustGiving page to rally support.

Five pairs of anglers took part, each committing to raise at least £200. Invitations went out, and pledges of support quickly followed—not only from within the Masonic community, but also from friends, neighbours, and local residents across Launton, Bicester, and beyond. The response far exceeded expectations, reflecting the high regard in which The Hummingbird Centre is held throughout the area.

Despite unusually dry weather and low water levels, which made for a quieter day on the fishing front, the event was a resounding success. The spirit of community and generosity shone through, culminating in a total of more than £4,000 raised for the Centre.

Graham and his wife, Sarah, visited the event along with their dog to personally thank participants—a touching moment that captured the heartfelt purpose behind the effort.
